Message from Organising Committee Chair

It is my pleasure to invite you to Alumina 2018, the 11th AQW International Conference, which will be held in September 2018 in Gladstone Queensland.  Alumina 2018 is organised by the Alumina Quality Workshop (AQW) Inc. and is expected to attract 300 industry producers and suppliers to the city from all over the world.

The Alumina Quality Workshop began in 1988 as a forum to bring the world’s alumina producers and their customers together to exchange ideas and information around a common goal of improved product quality.  The symposia have been held in Australia at an interval of three years.  Over time, the workshop has evolved into a major international symposium, incorporating all aspects of the production of alumina from bauxite.  In recognition of this evolution we have rebranded the conference name Alumina 2018.

The conference offers a unique opportunity to hear about the latest developments in alumina production and to network with other alumina producers, researchers and suppliers. The conference theme Efficiency for the Future reflects the current industry focus on cost reduction, optimisation of raw materials & energy use and the adoption of new technology. This continual drive for improved efficiency will ultimately result in a sustained and thriving alumina industry for the future.

The event will be held at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre (GECC), Gladstone, Queensland, Australia from 9 to 14 September, 2018.  It will feature 3 days of conference presentations and social functions, a day for industry tours followed by an industry workshop.

I am delighted that we are holding the conference in the regional location of Gladstone, Queensland.  Gladstone is a modern city that has grown around an industrial backbone and features two alumina refineries with a combined annual production of over 7 Mt of alumina.  The conference location will give an opportunity for delegates to experience both the regional location and to see the Rio Tinto Yarwun and QAL alumina refineries.  We hope that our national and international delegates will also allow some time to explore the surrounding region, which features the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef.

I look forward to meeting with you at Alumina 2018.

Dr Anthony Canfell Chair, Alumina 2018
